Developed in Southern Europe thought to be Italy, from a cabbage plant similar to cauliflower.

•Introduced to France by Catherine de’ Medici when she married Henry II in 1533
 
•Earliest mention in the United States was 1775 by John Randolph of Williamsburg in a Gardening book.  Did not become popular here until the mid 1920s
