Alfonsino Beryx splendens  Japan Kinmadai, Kinme, Germany Sudlicher Kaiserbarsch

A New Zealand fish with an average length 10.5 to 14 inches (30-50 cm), average weight 2.2 to 3.5 lbs) 1-1.5 kg. Widespread in many oceans. Brilliant scarlet above, sides red with silver tinge. Large scales, large eye, tail deeply forked. Body more slender and smoother than the related red snapper which has rough scales with coarse spines on their margins. Alfonsino is widely dispersed around New Zealand at depths of 200-800m but is common only in some locations is and nowhere abundant. Caught mainly by trawling. Resource size unknown but  possibly moderate. The related long-finned beryx is widely dispersed but uncommon in New  Zealand seas. Red snapper is more common in northern New Zealand, 200-400 m, but comprises only a small commercial resource.

The white flesh has a firm texture and is suited to most methods of cooking.
