Fuerte  is the production leader accounting for more than 75 percent (average) of the  annual California crop. It is almost ideally adapted to market requirements as to size, color, long season, or maturity, and hardiness. It is not adaptable to growing in Florida. The Fuerte is a Guatemalan/Mexican hybrid that was brought as bud wood to California from Mexico in 1911. The fruit is green, pear-shaped, 8 to 16 oz., thin, pliable and leathery, somewhat pebbled skin. The flavor is very good.
