The key to a good rice salad is the proper preparation of the rice.  each grain should be plump, soft, not sticky and the best rice is a long grain polished rice.

The flavor of the rice is affected by how it is prepares.  flavors can be infused in the cooking process such as using anything from slightly salted water to stocks or broths which will flavor the rice.  The rice makes up the body or bulk of the salad and flavoring the rice will add to the over all character of the salad. A major part of the flavor and texture will come from the garnishes used in the salad

The basic guidelines for  making a rice salad.

bulletIn a rice salad the rice is the body of the salad
bulletWhen possible utilize flavoring ingredients in the preparation of the rice
bulletUse just enough dressing to evenly coat all the salad's ingredients.
bulletUse fresh herbs and mix them directly with the pasta or the dressing.
bulletToss ingredients with high density like raw vegetables, in the pasta salad together before mixing with the dressing
bulletEither mayonnaise or oil and vinegar based may be used
