The concept originated in India.  The word curry refers to a cooked dish containing several ingredients and an assortment of spices.  

Indian cooks prepare a spice blend for each curry from individual spices  roasting them separately and grinding them together making the blends different for each dish.  In the home of most Indian's you ill find a spice mix called garam masala which may be homemade or purchased which is used as the starting point to flavor most dishes.

Commercial curry powders usually contain at least a dozen separate spices and often as many as twenty.  The general primary ingredients and their approximate proportions are:  

Coriander 35%  Cumin  6% Cloves 3%
Turmeric 18% Cardamom 6% Cayenne 1%
Fenugreek 10% Ginger  5% Allspice 1%
Cinnamon  8% Pepper  5% Mustard Seed 1%
